Norway Coastal Trip – Part 2

This post features the second part of a standard 8mm home movie of a trip taken along the coast of Norway in the months of April and May 1971. The first part of this series is available here.

The start of this film is a bit jittery but that only lasts a few seconds and then it settles down to be quite watchable.

Coastal Trip in Norway

There are many scenes of the coast of Norway in this initial part of the film including the Lofoten Wall and Vestfagoy. It’s fortunate that the original photographer titled the film because I wouldn’t be able to tell which particular mountain range was being filmed, although I can clearly see the Eggum Lighthouse at about 1:00 in.

After passing the Lighthouse, the ship enters harbour at the fishing village of Stamsund where presumably it docked for a night and then the film records a bit of the village of Harstad.

This part of the voyage seems to focus more of the towns and villages rather than just the coastline and I think it is better for that. There are more scenes of the daily life of the people of Norway and more town and village shots than sea and mountain views. The amount of snow and ice is noticeable but I guess that is what is expected in Norway.

There seems to be some shots of oil refineries – I certainly saw the name ‘Mobil’ at about 4:50.

Following a shot of a cable car the photographer seems to have taken a ride on one because there is a sequence shot from high altitude looking out over an island city and the bay beyond.

The final part of this series will be published in a few days.
