A School Fete or Garden Party from 1970

This vintage home movie from about 1970 seems to have been filmed at a school fete or open day, or possibly a garden party.

The film was shot on Kodachrome, standard 8mm film and although I don’t for certain know the location or date, I’ve estimated the date at 1970 based on the fashions of the people in the film.

This film is actually the 8th one from the same photographer which I’ve added to Vintage Home Movies; I bought all the films as part of a bundle on eBay a few months ago and I’ve been adding them to the site as time permits. Other films which this photographer took include a film of Piccadilly Circus in London and a military display in Aldershot.

School Fete film

To be honest this film is not well photographed. There are scenes where the the camera has panned too quickly or not been held steady enough, others where people’s heads are above or below the frame, and some poorly exposed sections (some of which I removed from the film because they were so poor). I judged that the film should still be included however because of the way it portrays life in the 1970s which is one of the main reasons I set up the site.

The film was shot in the gardens of a large house which could be a school which made me wonder if this was a school fete or open day. It’s also possible of course that the action took place at a National Trust or other large building.

The actual content of the film is, I guess what would be expected for a Fete or open day. Lots of shots of people enjoying the sunshine, playing games, eating, drinking and dancing. The thing which is very noticeably different from today, particularly seeing the groups of teenagers walking about is that nobody has headphones on or is looking at their phone!
