Interesting film of the Forth rail bridge c 1962

This post features an interesting film taken of the Forth Rail bridge near Edinburgh and also shows the early construction of the Forth Road bridge.

About the film

This is a standard 8 film which was taken on Agfa colour film. It was on the same reel as the last film I published and taken, presumably by the same photographer.

The location was easy to find and didn’t involve any complex internet searches because as soon as I saw the image of the bridge I could see that it was the Forth Rail bridge. The date of the film is an estimation, but based upon the images of the Road bridge which is shown in construction in the film. Since this was opened in 1964, I’ve estimated the date as around 1962.

Still images from the film.

The gallery below show a few images taken from the film to give a taste of the contents.

Film of the Forth Rail Bridge

The film of the Forth Rail Bridge is shown below.

I suspect that it was taken during a family holiday because as well as the section featuring the bridge there is also footage of the surrounding countryside. The actual shots of the bridge seem to be taken from the river on a boat, so it is possible that the family crossed the river by ferry and took the shots during the crossing.

It’s interesting to see a landmark as famous as the Rail bridge, and in this case it’s also great to see the early part of the Forth Road Bridge construction, because that allowed me to get a more precise date to the film.

I have assumed that the harbour and the beach shown at the start of the film are in the immediate area around the two bridges, but if anyone has any more accurate information please let me know and I’ll update the post.
