A holiday in Portugal and Spain in the mid 1970s

This vintage home movie features a typical family holiday film which was taken during two trips in the mid 1970s. The first part of the film was shot in Portugal in 1973 and the later part was a trip to Spain in 1976.

About the film

The film was taken on standard 8 film and although the two visits to Europe were a few years apart, it’s interesting to see that the dirt around the edge of the picture is consistent all the way through the film so the photographer never cleaned the film gate between films.

That is one of the main differences between Super 8 film and Standard 8 film I find. A Super 8 film has a very well defined, rectangular film gate which is normally pretty clean. Most Standard 8 films seem to have a fuzzy mess around the scene!

As with most of the films featured on Vintage Home Movies, I purchased this as a set of about 6 films on eBay and the rest of the films will probably be featured once I’ve scanned and viewed them.

The film of Portugal and Spain

The film is embedded below and, as I said in the intro it is a typical family holiday film showing the scenery around the area the family stayed and in family members enjoying themselves in various locations.

I’m not at all familiar with Portugal and only slightly more familiar with Spain (one holiday in Malaga doesn’t really give you a full knowledge of a country), so I can’t tell when the film switches from one location to the next – or to be honest if it actually does. The title is very much driven by the wording on the film box.
