An exciting Red Arrows display over water from the 1970s

The red arrows have been thrilling audiences since their formation in the mid 1960s, and this post features a display they performed sometime in the 1970s at a seaside location somewhere in the UK.

About the Red Arrows film

The film was shot on Super 8 Kodachrome II film and is the first of a collection of 25 individual, 50 ft reels which I bought as part of a house clearance sale on eBay for about £20. All the films were taken by the same photographer, and all seem to have been shot in the mid 1970s but unfortunately, there is no address or identification on any of the films, so I can’t find out who the photographer was.

The film is well exposed and focused, and the photographer has managed to keep the high speed aircraft within the frame of the camera most of the time, which is not an easy thing to do.

The display was obviously part of a larger air display because there are other aircraft as well as the Red Arrows; I’m not an aircraft expert, but I’m pretty sure the large four-engined plane is a Lancaster Bomber, and a Vulcan or Victor bomber also puts in an appearance as well as the Harrier Jump Jet.

Air displays were obviously a common event in the 1960 and 70s because, including this post, there are now four films featured on the site which were taken during such events:
